South Gate is one of the most significant surviving medieval gateways in King’s Lynn and a striking landmark for anyone approaching the town from the south. With its distinctive towers, arched entrance, and rich history, the gate provides a vivid reminder of the town’s former defensive boundary.
A historic entrance to the town
Built in the mid-fifteenth century, South Gate once formed part of the town’s fortifications and served as a controlled entry point for travellers and merchants. It marked the southern edge of King’s Lynn and stood as a symbol of authority, protection, and civic pride. Although the surrounding walls have long since disappeared, the gate remains exceptionally well preserved.
Architecture and features
South Gate is easily recognised by its twin octagonal towers, decorative stonework, and large central arch. The building includes guardrooms and chambers above the archway, which historically allowed watchmen to monitor traffic entering the town. Its combination of brick and stone reflects the craftsmanship of the medieval period and contributes to its Grade I listed status.
Plan your visit
South Gate is located on London Road, close to the southern entrance to King’s Lynn town centre. It can be viewed from the roadside or incorporated into a wider walk around The Walks and the surrounding heritage areas. Whether you are visiting for the architecture, the history, or simply passing by, South Gate remains one of the most impressive reminders of the town’s medieval past.
Between May and September visits can also be organised for groups 6+.
